Dear Parish Family,
As we reflect on God's abundant generosity toward us, many of us are also blessed with investments — stocks, mutual funds, or other securities — that have grown in value over the years. If you are considering a gift to St. Raymond, donating appreciated stock, rather than cash, can be one of the most tax-wise ways to give, allowing your generosity to go even further in service of our parish community.
Why Consider Giving Stock?
Avoid Capital Gains Tax
Directly donate stock held over one year, and neither you nor St. Raymond Church owes capital gains tax on its growth in value
Deduct the Full Fair Market Value
For most donors who itemize, a gift of long-term appreciated stock may be deducted at its full fair market value on the date of transfer, generally up to 30% of adjusted gross income, with a five-year carryover for any excess.
Make a Larger Impact
Because the parish receives the full value of the stock without it being reduced by capital gains tax, more of your gift's value goes directly toward our mission — the same shares can go further as a gift than they would as after-tax cash.
Preserve Your Cash
Giving stock instead of cash allows you to support the parish while keeping your cash on hand — for living expenses, emergencies, or reinvestment — rather than liquidating savings to make a gift.
How It Works
- Contact the parish office — we will provide a simple stock-transfer form and instructions for your broker.
- Your broker transfers the shares directly to Diocese of Oakland brokerage account on behalf of St. Raymond Church; you never take receipt of the cash.
- The Diocese of Oakland sells the shares (or holds them, per Diocesan policy) and provides you a gift acknowledgment letter for your tax records, noting the number of shares and the date received.
- Consult your tax advisor or financial planner to see how a gift of stock fits your personal tax and giving picture.
