The parable of the Landowner and the Laborers…..
What is a fair wage??
A wise man once asked the AI program ChatGPT a simple question: “If one person works eight hours and another works only one hour, what is a fair way to pay them?” The AI quickly calculated the answer: if the full day’s wage was $200, the one-hour worker should receive $25.
Logical. Measurable. Fair.
Then the wise man added, “What if that person spent the other seven hours desperately looking for work and needs the full day’s wages to feed his family?”
The AI could calculate the hours, but it couldn’t calculate mercy.
That is the challenge of today’s Gospel. The workers who labored all day complained because those who arrived late received the same wage. They were measuring fairness by what they believed they deserved. God measures differently.
We can calculate hours, sacrifices, and accomplishments—but grace cannot be calculated.
The question Jesus asks us is not, “Am I getting what I deserve?” but, “Can I rejoice when someone else receives God’s generosity?”
Peace be with you,
